Watch/Candidate List and Legacy/Archive List

Watch/Candidate and Legacy/Archive Chemicals

The Round 3 selection process also included identification of Watch/Candidate Chemicals, chemicals of concern that require future research and assessment, and Legacy/Archive Chemicals, high hazard chemicals with no indication of current use, to deter (re)introduction into supply chains.

Watch/Candidate Chemicals

These high-hazard process chemicals were identified to be monitored and considered for Priority Chemicals in a future round if new relevant data emerges about their use and/or safer alternatives. This sends a clear signal to chemical formulators and electronics companies to accelerate development and uptake of safer alternatives.

The selection included:

  • Chemicals with insufficient information on use or availability of safer alternatives for definitive selection; and/or
  • Chemicals without potentially viable safer alternatives

    Legacy/Archive Chemical List

These high-hazard chemicals were nominated during the selection process and were assessed to not currently be in use as process chemicals in the electronics industry. They are listed to deter (re)introduction into supply chains.

    The selection included chemicals that:

    • Were historically used, with no indication of current use, as a process chemical within the electronics industry
    • Meet CEPN High Hazard Criteria
    • Have been, or are being, phased out globally as a process chemical
        CAS # Chemical
        75-26-3 2-Bromopropane
        87-68-3 Hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD)
        56-23-5 Tetrachloromethane (Carbon Tetrachloride)
        71-55-6 1,1,1-Trichloroethane (TCA)
